A New Fitting Experience
Confession: I look forward to shopping for a new bra about as much as I like going to the dentist. But there comes a time to face our fears—and judging by the motley crew of sad stretched-out bras in my lingerie drawer, the clock has struck done. It was time to bring in the pros, so I booked an appointment at Melmira.
Upon arriving at the uptown lingerie and swimwear boutique, I was immediately taken by its minimalist spa-like atmosphere. I checked in at reception then took a seat beside several other women waiting for their custom bra fitting appointments. Melmira is all about the art of fitting and their in-house experts work one on one with clients to find the perfect fitting bra—yes, this unicorn does exist.
My expert fitter Amie (who’s also a co-owner of Melmira with her three sisters) ushers me into a change room. It’s a busy Saturday but my appointment starts on time, which I appreciate. Amie asks me a few questions in order to create a client profile, which includes my specific needs, likes and dislikes when it comes to bras. Next she has me stand to be measured (note: they don’t use measuring tapes at Melmira). Amie puts her hands around my rib cage while I’m still fully dressed and says she’ll be back in a minute with some options. A few moments later I’m trying on the first one—an Empreinte seamless underwire bra—and it’s a perfect fit. No gaps, no falling straps, no cups runneth over. As Amie explains why this particular style works for me, I’m suddenly aware that I don’t feel anxious at all. I’m listening, I’m learning—and I’m even laughing. Talking bras with Amie is like having coffee with a good friend who’s super knowledgeable and non-judgmental.
Over the next 40 minutes, I try on a variety of brands and styles, including several fun fashion pieces that I would never have had the courage to pluck from a rack for myself much less find the right fit, like a navy lace demi-cup and a leopard print molded cup. In the end, we decide that a Simone Pérèle plunge bra is the winner, though Melmira will keep my other faves on file for my next visit—which will be soon. There’s a killer strapless dress in my closet that’s never had a night out because I don’t have the right bra to wear with it. My takeaway? Build a bra wardrobe. “You don’t wear the same shoes with every outfit,” says Amie. #Truth.
